Luck of local \u00a0potable \u00a0water\u00a0sources threatens not only thriving but a mere survival of rural communities all over the world. \u00a0Establishing potable water wells requires a lot of fundings and resources and often cost prohibitive for\u00a0local governments in South America and Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Searching for shallow groundwater require knowledge\u00a0of subsurface layers and locating intensity and directions of water fluxes, which can be accomplished\u00a0with geophysical methods of\u00a0vertical electrical sounding (VES)\u00a0and\u00a0self-potential (SP). \u00a0A method of\u00a0VES can distinguish differences in electrical resistivity or conductivity at the multiple (10+) layers in\u00a0soil profiles. These differences reveal the changes in soil texture and structure \u00a0between water-bearing\u00a0and waterproof \u00a0layers, \u00a0which form a framework for \u00a0the subsurface water fluxes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">The directions and\u00a0intensities of the fluxes \u00a0can then be evaluated with the self-potential method. However, conventional\u00a0equipment for VES and SP is very expensive, bulky and complicated to operate. We tested a simple\u00a0low-cost handheld device,\u00a0LandMapper ERM-02, to evaluate layers in the ground with VES method and\u00a0results were well \u00a0correlated with drilled profiles in Central TX. \u00a0Information is provided for the VES\u00a0array assembly, field measuring procedure and interpretation of sounding results. Previously, device was\u00a0used in Astrakhan area, Russia for estimation of the groundwater table and salinity layers in the soil\u00a0profiles.
